Explore the Historic Phoenix Park in Dublin

Nestled just on the outskirts of Dublin’s bustling city centre, Phoenix Park offers an enchanting escape brimming with history, scenic beauty, and vibrant activities. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or rediscovering it as a local, this historic park is a must-see attraction. From the wild deer roaming freely to captivating events and iconic landmarks, Phoenix Park has something for everyone. Let’s take a closer look at why this gem deserves a spot on your Dublin itinerary.

A Brief History of Phoenix Park

Did you know that Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed parks in Europe? Originally established in the 1660s as a royal hunting ground, it spans over 1,700 acres. While the galloping of horses has been replaced by the soft padding of joggers and cyclists, the park remains breathtakingly wild in its charm.

One fun historical titbit – Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the President of Ireland, is located within the park. This stately Georgian mansion has stood since 1751 and is said to have inspired the design of the White House in Washington! A slice of Ireland’s creativity truly went global. Guided tours of Áras an Uachtaráin are available on Saturdays, offering a deeper insight into its architectural magnificence and storied past.

Phoenix Park opened to the public in 1747 and has been delighting visitors for centuries. Its sprawling green spaces host countless recreational activities and unforgettable experiences.

What to See and Do at Phoenix Park

    Dublin Zoo

One of the world’s oldest zoos, Dublin Zoo is a family favourite situated in the heart of Phoenix Park. It’s home to over 400 animals from across the globe, once including the famed MGM lion – yes, the roaring feline from the iconic movie opening credits! The zoo offers an immersive experience, combining education and entertainment for visitors of all ages. In the winter months the Zoo becomes a home to the ‘Wild Lights Experience’ which is usually a sell-out experience attracting families, friends and couples for an enchanting display of illuminated lanterns, with the theme changing annually there is always something new to see.

    Spot the Fallow Deer

Phoenix Park is famous for its wild, majestic herds of fallow deer, which have roamed freely here for over 300 years. Keep your distance, as they’re wild animals, but do take a moment to marvel at their beauty as they graze in the lush meadows.

    Victorian Flower Gardens

Take a stroll through the picturesque Victorian Flower Gardens, a kaleidoscope of seasonal blooms that feel like stepping into a fairytale. These gardens, meticulously maintained, are perfect for a leisurely wander or a romantic photo op.

    Áras an Uachtaráin

Remember how we mentioned the park’s presidential ties? You can tour Áras an Uachtaráin most Saturdays, exploring its elegant interiors and learning more about its unique history.

    Bloom

Each spring, Phoenix Park transforms for Bord Bia Bloom, a must-see event for garden enthusiasts running from May 29th to June 2nd in 2025. This vibrant festival showcases the best in garden design, with culinary delights, workshops, and stunning landscapes spread over 70 acres. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the start of summer!

    Concerts at the Park

An evening spent at a concert in Phoenix Park is an experience like no other. Big names like Zach Bryan and Turnpike Troubadours will be performing June 20th-22nd, 2025. Picture yourself soaking in the music, surrounded by the park’s lush greenery – it’s the ultimate summer vibe.
