If you’re arriving to the land of a thousand welcomes on 1st January, you’re just in time to catch the end of the New Year’s Festival in Dublin. While most of the action takes place from late on 31st December to very early on 1st January, there are lots of events, family-friendly gatherings and displays to catch, no matter how bad your hangover is from the night before! New Year’s Day Celebrations take place in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar with a festival of live music and performances suitable for all ages. Events take place from 1-6 pm and are free for all with no tickets required.

    Tradfest Dublin

The highlight of every January is the fantastic Tradfest, bringing Irish music and culture into the social spotlight. Tradfest is a celebration of Irish music in various locations in and around Temple Bar from 26th to 30th of January and welcomes performers, organisers and attendees from all over the world. Over 50 live concerts take place over the extended weekend in pubs throughout Temple Bar some of which are ticketed, and others are not. This year, venues include some of the most beautiful and notable buildings as well as local pubs and bars for a great variety. There are other events pairing with Tradfest, celebrating Irish culture, heritage and art. Check the Tradfest website for the full line-up of performers & artists.

    January Sales in Dublin

If Christmas shopping wasn’t enough for you, the January sales are a great time to visit Dublin. Most shops, department stores and boutiques offer discounts on last season’s stock to clear space for the new year lines. That means you’ll find bargains on everything from clothing and accessories to appliances and décor. If you have something special in mind and Santa doesn’t leave it under the tree for you, bag it in the January sales which often start from St. Stephens Day. You have lots of options for shopping from the array of shops in Dublin City Centre to shopping centres like The Square Tallaght and Liffey Valley.

    Irish Whiskey Museum

A sample of Irish Whiskey is never a bad idea (unless you’re driving) but it never tastes better than on a cold January evening. Make a booking or drop into the Irish Whiskey Museum on your trip to Dublin and learn more about the history and production of this liquid gold. The Irish Whiskey Museum in Dublin offers guided tours on the history of Irish whiskey and most importantly, interactive tastings complete with expert commentary. It’s a must-do for lovers of whiskey and even those who have never appreciated it before are sure to have their heads turned. The gift shop is packed with local brands and bottles you wouldn’t find in shops – the perfect way to warm up the rest of your January.

    Sports in January in Dublin

Sporting events slow down a bit in January, but there are still a few rugby games planned as part of the United Rugby Championship. Watch local heroes Leinster compete for a place in the final when they face fellow Irish team Connacht on January 1st. The second match in January is against a formidable Welsh side on 28th of January. Both matches take place in RDS Arena in Ballsbridge in Dublin but are equally as exciting from any local sports bar or pub if you can’t get tickets. A Leinster win is a perfect way to brighten up a dark January
